The dictatorship of Francisco Franco

Like many countries, the history of Spain is complex rife with conquests, reconquests, and civil war. In April of 1939, Francisco Franco rose to power at the end of a civil war. Even though Spain was neutral in WW1, many influences including indebtedness to the Axis powers meant that Spain was aligned with Hitler under Franco even though he professed neutrality to the Allies.

A 1947 referendum resulted in the establishment of a Catholic kingdom with Franco as the head for life. His fascist regime remained isolated from the UN until 1955 and Nato until 1992. He ruled for about 40 years and died in 1975. Prince Juan Carlos was crowned king of Spain in November of 1975 and Spaniards approved a new constitution in 1978. Spain joined the EU in 1986 and hosted the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
